The Federal Transit Administration (FTA), within the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), said recently that the Mobility on Demand (MOD) Sandbox program is accepting applications for funding to support logistical research that can lead to better public transportation.
The program aims to facilitate research into how transportation systems and infrastructure can become more accessible and efficient for as many individuals as possible. A total of $8 million in funding will be awarded.
“Innovation is driving our world forward, and we want public transportation providers to seize opportunities to embrace new ideas and solutions,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said. “Technology is a powerful tool for bringing people together like never before – to connect communities in ways that build and increase opportunity.”
The DOT said projects could consist of payment and financing mechanisms, on-demand services, connectability with vehicles and other areas. Eligible recipients of this program would include state and municipal departments of transportation, tribal organizations and other public transportation agencies. Organizations are also encouraged to work with nonprofit and private organizations.
The application deadline for Sandbox grants is July 5. USDOT’s Low and No-Emissions Vehicle Deployment Program also is taking applications, but the deadline for this program is Friday, May 13.
“We believe the latest in research and technology can help improve access and mobility for all,” FTA Acting Administrator Carolyn Flowers said.
