The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) said Friday that lanes of I-65 south of Indianapolis are now open to motorists as the first step of Indiana’s Major Moves 2020 contract is finished.

Contractors have finished work on new ramp lanes on I-65 at exits for County Line Road, Southport Road and Main Street. The project, which cost approximately $36 million, also updated overpasses, repaired four miles of I-65, improved drainage and installed noise walls.

Though the new lanes are accessible to drivers, there will be ongoing construction in the region. Lane closures will continue over the next few weeks until workers finish striping the road and paving the shoulder between Main Street (Exit 99 in Greenwood) and Southport Road (Exit 103).

The I-65 project is part of Major Moves 2020, an initiative to to widen and rehabilitate sections of roads that are almost 50 years old.

Construction continues on widening a nine-mile stretch of I-65 between State Road 44, near Franklin, and Main Street.

“When it comes to infrastructure in the Hoosier State, nothing is more important than taking care of what we have, finishing what we start and planning for the future,” Gov. Mike Pence said. “Our Major Moves 2020 highway program encapsulates all of those goals.”
