Every Day Counts, an initiative of the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Center for Accelerating Innovation, said that the first geosynthetic reinforced soil-integrated bridge system (GRS-IBS) project in Indiana was recently completed in Hamilton County,
The Hamilton County Highway Department was in charge of the project and the FHWA offered technical assistance throughout the project, which replaced a culvert with the new GRS-IBS structure.
GRS-IBS construction involves basic earthwork methods and employs commonly available equipment and materials, which means projects can be completed faster and at lower cost.
Hamilton County is just one of four counties in Indiana that joined a peer exchange for GRS-IBS. The exchange received sponsorship from FHWA in order to construct four additional GRS-IBS bridges throughout the upcoming years.
The next GRS-IBS bridge that is part of the exchange is scheduled to begin construction in spring 2016. The Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program intends to hold a showcase of GRS-IBS exhibits at the same time as the construction.
