Drivers should watch for traffic detours and lane closings as the first phase of a major road road work begins on a project that will culminate in the construction of a new roundabout interchange on U.S. 31 at Indiana State Road 28 in Tipton County, Indiana.

Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) crews soon will alter pavement markings ahead of the project. The northbound-dedicated right-hand turn lane will be removed, and the right-hand through lane will be marked as a straight or right-turn-only lane. The three other lanes for left-turning, straight-only and right-turning travel will reduced from 12-feet wide to 11-feet wide; a temporary concrete barrier will be installed along the road’s median and shoulders.

Work on the $10.8 million project, which is expected to begin in June and be completed by November, was awarded to Rieth-Riley Construction. Crews soon will begin building up earth embankments for new bridge approaches and interchange ramps.

INDOT officials said a 120-day road closure of State Road 28 will begin in June, with traffic detoured to State Road 26 via State Road 29 and State Road 19. U.S. 31 will be reduced to one lane in each direction, and motorists will not have direct access to or from State Road 28.

Maps of road closures and work zones are available online at www.indot.carsprogram.org.
