The Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT) shared its Draft Fiscal Year (FY) 2016-2020 Improvement Program with the state’s transportation commission on Tuesday.
The highway program reflects a law approved earlier this year that requires 100 percent of additional revenue allocated to the Iowa DOT be spent on critical roads and bridges.
For FY 2016-2020, approximately $3.2 billion is expected to be available for highway right of way and construction, and more than $1.3 billion will go toward modernizing Iowa’s existing highway system and improve highway safety features. More than $1.1 billion is earmarked for Iowa’s state-owned bridges.
The commission and Iowa DOT continue to recognize the critical importance of an effective and efficient interstate highway system. The interstate highways connect all transportation systems in Iowa, allowing freight carriers to deliver Iowa’s products to the world’s marketplace.
The program’s highway section includes significant interstate investments on Interstate 29 in Sioux City, the interstate system in Council Bluffs and the I-74 Mississippi River bridge replacement in Bettendorf.
Portions of these investments address stewardship needs.
