Thomas F. Prendergast, the chairman and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), recently announced that James L. Ferrara will be the new interim president of the MTA New York City Transit (NYCT).
Ferrara, who previously served as the president of MTA Bridges and Tunnels, will fulfill this role when Carmen Bianco, current NYCT president, retires on August 21. Ferrara will remain the interim president until another president is chosen. The MTA is currently searching internationally to find someone to be the permanent president, and this search includes both external and internal candidates.
“Running MTA New York City Transit is one of the most complicated and critical jobs in the entire MTA, and Jim’s excellent judgment and strong managerial skills make me confident the agency will be in good hands while we find Transit’s next permanent president,” Prendergast said.
MTA NYCT operates bus, subway and paratransit services within New York City.
“I am honored to be asked to assume this challenging role, and I thank the chairman for entrusting me with it,” Ferrara said. “This temporary shift will require continued good work and support from my colleagues at Bridges and Tunnels as well as NYCT, and I thank them in advance for their help advancing the work of the entire MTA.”
