Joseph M. Casey, the general manager of SEPTA, announced on Aug. 19, 2015 that he will retired beginning on Sept. 30, 2015.
“It has been a privilege to lead this organization, and I thank the SEPTA board for the opportunity,” Casey said. “I also want to thank my staff for their efforts over the years, as well as the entire SEPTA organization for their dedication to serve the citizens of this region.”
Casey has led SEPTA since 2008. He has spent 34 years serving the organization in a variety of positions. During that time, he successfully streamlined expenses, decreased costs and balanced operating budgets. He contained the overall budget growth despite fuel costs and skyrocketing healthcare.
“During my time as general manager, I committed our organization to improve the customer experience — and I can say with confidence that these efforts will only grow stronger moving forward,” Casey said. “With dedicated funding for capital improvements, resulting from state Act 89, we will have resources to further enhance the riding experience for our customers, improve reliability and preserve the transit system for future generations.”
Casey’s career started in the transportation department at Consolidated Rail Corp. In 1982, he started working at SEPTA. His first six years were spent as the chief financial officer and treasurer of the authority. He also fulfilled senior management positions in finance and internal audit.
“Joe has led SEPTA through challenging times, while consistently improving SEPTA’s performance, customer service and overall public perception,” Pasquale T. “Pat” Deon, SEPTA board chairman, said. “His leadership and expertise have been keys to moving SEPTA forward.”
