The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) recently gave Saginaw County a state transportation grant to finance a resurfacing project for Veterans Memorial Parkway.

The project applies to half a mile on the parkway, from Needham Street to McGill Street. The road is prominent because it gives drivers access to I-675, I-75, M-81, and M-13. It also provides access to other heavily traveled roads in the local area. Veterans Memorial Parkway is the primary route that emergency vehicles use for the eastern portion of Saginaw.

Without the parkway, industry, commerce and residents are affected in the northeastern section of Saginaw. Several businesses have voiced concerns that their ability to ship in goods might be affected if the road is not repaired.

Resurfacing this roadway is part of a larger project set for summer 2017, involving joint and concrete-pavement repairs on the parkway between McGill Street and Wadsworth Avenue as well as from Washington Avenue to Needham Street.

The resurfacing project costs $370,941. The state’s Transportation Economic Development Fund (TEDF) Category F grant funding will pay for $259,658, with the remaining $111,283 covered by the City of Saginaw.
