Thanks to public feedback in a survey, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has chosen the best option for necessary lane closures on Interstate 275; the survey for public feedback concerned road closure options that are needed for crews to complete the I-275 project next year, and the survey was conducted online from Oct. 2 through 9.
The project involves Wayne and Oakland counties, and the survey involved 3,765 participants from the area.
Results show that the best lane closure would be to close a single direction of the roadway at a time. This means that the construction project can be finished within just one construction season.
The repair project for I-275 will begin in spring 2016. It will involve Novi, Livonia and Farmington Hills communities. The project requires a $70 to $80 million investment. It will extend from 5 Mile Road to the I-96/I-696/M-5 interchange.
To finish the project, crews will replace concrete pavement for 13 miles, repair 16 bridges, install intelligent transportation (ITS) elements, repair exit and entrance ramps at all of the “Mile” roads and improve drainage.
MDOT sorted through 22 potential road closure methods, lane shifts, detours, configurations and similar traffic control methods (including barriers, barrels, manpower, signs and more) to provide the public survey with the three best options.
