The New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) said this week that it will hold a third community meeting on planned construction work on the Canarsie Tunnel.

This project entails rebuilding both tubes of the subway tunnel, and the MTA will select one of two contract bids to execute the project. The timing is intentional, as federal funds will be lost if the MTA does not move forward soon.

“The community outreach process that we kicked off earlier this month has given us a valuable opportunity to communicate directly to our customers about the need for this work and the pros and cons of the two approaches under consideration,” MTA New York City Transit President Veronique  Hakim said. “Just as importantly, our outreach is giving us a better understanding of what matters most to the affected communities as we plan for this highly impactful project.”

This meeting will take place 7 p.m. Thursday at Beraca Baptist Church, 9602 Flatlands Ave. in Brooklyn. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

The stage of the project that requires closure of the tunnel is not expected until January 2019. A finalized project proposal will be selected in July.
