NAFA Fleet Management Association recently collaborated with CALSTART to develop and implement a new sustainability accreditation program.

The program includes a tiered performance level that will promote environmental sustainability by saving fuel. The evaluative program, which grades fleets in comparison to world-leading goals, is the first of its kind.

“With this new program, fleets will be able to measure, manage and improve,” Bill Van Amburg, CALSTART senior vice president, said. “Fleets start at any level of activity – the point is to start down the path: first by base lining where they are, then by validating their progress, and finally, by benchmarking themselves against rigorous standards and the actions of their peers. It is the new measure of fleet sustainability.”

The program will help to develop better definition, clarity and recognition about the meaning of sustainability within the fleet industry. NAFA and CALSTART intend for the program to be a set standard for the industry, as leaders strive to make concrete adjustments and improvements in enhancing fuel efficiency, reducing emissions and decreasing the use of fuel.

“The environmental and rating system for buildings known as LEED has established some clear guidelines and encouraged strong voluntary action in the built environment,” John Boesel, the president and CEO of CALSTART, said. “We hope these standards have a similar impact on the fleet sector.”
