New York State Bridge Authority issued the following announcement on Oct. 1.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today signed legislation (S8954/A 10787-A) designating a portion of State Route 19 between Sayre Road and Fox Road in the towns of Warsaw and Middlebury in Wyoming County to Vietnam veteran Private First Class David Coveny of Wyoming, New York. PFC Coveny, who served in the U.S. Army as a Light Weapons specialist during the Vietnam War, was killed by a land mine in South Vietnam on Sept. 30, 1967.

“Private First Class David Coveny served his country with honor and courage, sacrificing his life to protect the freedom of his fellow Americans,” Governor Cuomo said. “It is only right that his bravery is honored in a way that will stand the test of time and preserve Private First Class Coveny’s memory.”

Senator Patrick Gallivan said, “There is no way we can fully repay those who serve in our Armed Forces, but we can honor our hometown heroes by dedicating a roadway that countless locals and visitors travel each and every day. This designation will help ensure that Private First Class David Coveny’s legacy and service to our country will not be forgotten.”

Assembly Member David DiPietro said, “PFC David Coveny was one of seven brothers who served in the military, and was the only one who did not return. I worked for this to honor him and his family of true heroes whose sacrifice we will all remember every day as we drive down State Route 19.”
