Crews working with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) conducted work on the bridge replacement project for Hell Canyon bridge, located on State Route 89, Thursday.

The work first began at 7 p.m. and ended on schedule at 7 a.m. Friday.

The night work required that drivers follow reroutes for a new, temporary detour that ran alongside the current highway. The detour was set in place in time for the closure.

In addition, all of the drivers who needed to travel on SR 89 were limited to a single lane. Flaggers helped the motorists safely maneuver through the construction area.

Drivers were told to estimate additional time for their commutes; however, delays did not last long at approximately 10 minutes.

The current bridge replacement project, which is worth $14.4 million, first started in mid-July. ADOT says the project should be finished by late next year. When the new bridge is completed, it will improve the safety of traveling on SR 89 and benefit the surrounding community as well as visiting travelers.
