The New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) said recently that Donald Spero has been selected to serve as president of the Bridges and Tunnels Division (B&T).

Spero will oversee the implementation of electronic tolling at the Rockaway crossing and the implementation of other environmentally conscious projects. Spero joined the MTA in 1988 as director of the Capital Budget Division and has served at higher levels within the MTA, including director of strategic and capital planning, deputy chief finance officer, vice president and chief finance officer, and executive vice president.

“Don’s proven track record of success and his years of experience in capital programming and planning are major assets to MTA Bridges and Tunnels at a time when we are embarking on huge capital projects to solidify the future of our facilities,” MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas Prendergast said. “Our 2015-2019 Capital Program includes 17 B&T projects that are expected to use innovative design-build implementation that will set the example for the rest of our agencies on how these projects can be cost-effective and minimize construction time.”

Within the Capital Program, there is approximately $3 billion in capital-improvement projects for bridges and tunnels that will consist of enhancements to structural integrity and toll-station upgrades.
