U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) held a meeting with Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx on Tuesday, during which Brown focused on subjects that are important to his Ohio constituents, including a long-term, bipartisan transportation funding bill.
As of today, over 6,500 bridges in Ohio are considered either “functionally obsolete” or “structurally deficient.” The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) said these bridges require crucial repairs, which will only be possible with reauthorization of funding that is scheduled to expire at the end of July.
“Too many of our roads, bridges and railways have fallen into disrepair. We need a long-term transportation plan to ensure that Ohio’s roads and bridges are safe,” Brown said. “I’m glad that Secretary Foxx understands the importance of investing in our nation’s infrastructure.”
Brown is a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, and promises to continue pressing Congress for improved transportation infrastructure funding. Brown is part of a group of eight other senators — which includes both leaders and ranking members of the Senate Commerce, Finance, and Environment and Public Works Committees — that has sent a letter outlining the best path to a long-term transportation funding bill to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
