The Plymouth School District of Terryville, Connecticut, won a 2015 mini-grant from the National Center for Safe Routes to School and Schwinn’s Helmets on Heads Program, according to an announcement Wednesday.
The school district will use funds to purchase bicycles, helmets and safety gear for students in the after-school bicycle club. Students in the club also will produce a video on bicycle and helmet safety to share with students in elementary schools across the district.
The Connecticut Safe Routes to School program is a state arm of a national program that began in 2005. Based on its student enrollment, Connecticut receives funding for infrastructure and projects like the educational video that Plymouth students will create during the 2014-2015 academic year.
The national Safe Routes to School program encourages communities to improve the safety of those walking and biking to school through a variety of programs including constructing safe crosswalks, creating educational programs and encouraging children and parents to walk and bike to school safely.
