Crews began working Feb. 9 on replacing or updating the standard round, yellow railroad crossing signs bearing “RXR” in four northern Utah counties.
The advance-warning signs alert motorists of an upcoming railway and to be prepared to slow down or stop.
Some signs only need their bases replaced. Once that work is completed, crews will be upgrading signs. The contractors say the entire project should be completed by mid-March, with a total of 523 signs being improved or replaced.
The signs help increase motorist awareness of railroad crossings by improving safety and preventing train-car and train-pedestrian crashes. The signs are the national standard for railroad safety signs, specified by the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and have been in use in a variety of forms since the 1940s.
Motorists should be prepared to slow down or stop for crews working on the signs.
