Rhode Island Department of Transportation issued the following announcement on April 1.

Looking for something to do this Summer? Join Team RIDOT. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is currently recruiting for its Summer internship program. The deadline for full-time college students to apply is Friday, April 19.

Traditionally, RIDOT welcomes nearly 100 students each Summer to enhance its workforce. Positions are available in different areas of the Department including, Policy, Planning, Project Management, Construction, Maintenance, Traffic, Transit, Materials, Financial Management, Information Technology, Legal, Environmental, and Public Affairs.

Students should be prepared for a challenging and rewarding experience in a fast-paced professional environment both in and out of the office setting. This includes bringing what you learned in class to life by interacting with engineers as they oversee road or bridge construction, testing materials such as concrete, asphalt, or gravel to ensure they meet the proper standards, or evaluating potential traffic safety improvements, such as new signing, striping, or pavement markings at various intersections.

Hands on troubleshooting and repairing of desktop computers and tablets is also possible, as is the opportunity to serve as a travel ambassador for our commuter train stations, and the Providence to Newport ferry, or to assist with the planning and implementation of special events, such as ribbon cuttings and groundbreakings.

Since RIDOT has an exemplary reputation with government or private companies, internships at the Department are looked upon favorably with future employers. In fact, many full-time RIDOT employees began their transportation careers as former RIDOT interns.

Online applications are currently being accepted at the Seasonal & Internship Postings link, below. Jobs will begin in May and last through Labor Day. Interns are required to work between 35-40 hours per week weekdays, with salaries ranging from $14 to $25 per hour based upon experience and job classification. Various Fall semester internships may also be available to full-time college students based upon academic obligations and existing positions.
