The Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation recently received Green Marine certification for its environmental performance

The U.S. Department of Transportation agency received a score of 4.1 for spill prevention, greenhouse gases and community impact. It earned a perfect 5 for its environmental leadership.

Green Marine, a voluntary organization, provides a certification program that testifies to environmental stewardship in the marine industry based in North America. Participants include terminals, shipyards, ports and shipowners throughout the U.S. and Canada. All participants of the Green Marine program are urged to decrease their environmental footprints by receiving certifications and achieving nine separate areas of concrete actions.

The 2015 Green Marine Performance Report was based on information gathered from 93 individual participants. The number of participants sets a record for the last seven years. More than half of the attendees stated that they had a notable increase in a minimum of one of the four categories included in the report. This proves that sustainability is spreading through marine shipping industries.
