The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) said it has launched its most significant series of service improvements in decades to meet the demands of a growing ridership that tops 700,000 on a normal weekday.

The improvements are aimed at increasing the frequency of Municipal Railway (Muni) service, simplifying the Muni network and making navigating the system easier for customers. The initiative will increase daily service for 30 percent of Muni riders starting April 25.

San Francisco’s transportation agency also will become the only agency nationwide to completely replace its fleet with low- or zero-emission Siemens vehicles, officials said.

“Muni has literally turned the corner in terms of service success,” SFMTA’s transit director John Haley said. He added that the agency’s on-time performance has increased steadily over the past seven months.

With the majority of the people using the city’s Muni system taking the bus, the new initiative prioritizes the busiest bus routes by enhancing frequency and extending service hours to ease crowding.
