The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will close Seattle’s State Route 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct this weekend to complete semiannual bridge inspections.

The inspectors will evaluate the bridge for any signs of cracks. They will measure the current cracks to ensure that they are not growing, and they will also search for new signs of age or damage. In addition, they will check for any structural movement in the foundations of the viaduct.

On Saturday and Sunday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Alaskan Way Viaduct will be closed between South Spokane Street and the Battery Street Tunnel.

On Sunday, from 6 a.m. to noon, SR 99/Aurora Avenue North will be closed in both directions.
Northbound lanes will be closed between North 47th Street and the Battery Street Tunnel, and southbound lanes will be closed between North 38th Street and the Battery Street Tunnel.

Drivers should plan for extra time and alternative routes to reach their destinations. WSDOT crews expect heightened congestion because of the closure.

These inspections are conducted twice annually and are an important part of guaranteeing that the bridge is safe for travelers, WSDOT said.

In addition to road-work closures, SR99/Aurora Avenue North will be closed Sunday morning for the annual Hot Chocolate 15K/5K Run.
