Seattle is taking advantage of the services provided by Uber to create a partnership that aims to significantly reduce the number of drunk-driving accidents.
The pilot program is part of Seattle’s Vision Zero plan to end traffic deaths and serious injuries on city streets by 2030.
Uber will begin setting up breathalyzer kiosks to help educate people about legal blood-alcohol levels. The first promotion in this initiative took place on St. Patrick’s Day. Anyone who took a breathalyzer test received a coupon for a free ride of up to $15 in an Uber vehicle. It was the first time a breathalyzer was made available publicly in the City of Seattle.
This month, city officials have distributed promotional coasters with Uber discount code MYRIDEHOME on them to over 150 bars and clubs throughout Ballard, Fremont, Capitol Hill, Pioneer Square, Belltown, South Lake Union and the University District. Users can get the aforementioned $15 free ride if they type in the code on the Uber app.
Seattle streets are considered among the safest in the country, but the city still wishes to reduce incidents, especially those resulting in fatalities. Seattle Department of Transportation Director Scott Kubly said the goal is to provide people with a safe, easy and affordable alternative to get home during celebrations like St. Patrick’s Day.
Uber Washington General Manager Brooke Steger said the company is committed to providing reliable transportation to Seattle residents year-round.
