Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Pa.), chairman of the transportation and infrastructure committee, released a statement in response to the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) proposed legislation concerning unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
The new FAA-proposed regulations outline the restriction of UAS use to daytime and high-visibility conditions, in addition to implementing height and weight restrictions and certifications for aircraft use.
“The FAA’s proposed regulation on small UAS is a positive first step,” Shuster said. “We need to properly balance safety, privacy and access, while ensuring the United States remains at the forefront of aviation technology. As we continue to review this proposal and as the FAA finalizes the rule, I look forward to hearing reactions and input from all stakeholders.”
UAS come in a variety of shapes and sizes and serve diverse purposes. Regardless of size, the responsibility to fly safely equally applies to both manned and unmanned aircraft. The FAA is partnering with several industry associations to promote the safe and responsible use of drones.
