Siemens recently received a contract from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to automate the Queens Boulevard Line, which is one of the busiest lines in the New York City transit system.
The contract, which is worth $156 million, obligates Siemens to install Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) on the line. This technology is radio-based and will offer real-time data about speed conditions and vehicle positions. The will enable system operators to increase the quantity of vehicles on a specific rail line without compromising safety precautions.
The new system will serve to decrease the quantity of wayside equipment while also decreasing maintenance and service costs and disruptions. The new technology will be able to locate all of the trains on the tracks and control their speed. This will benefit riders and employees by improve the punctuality of the transit.
Thanks to the new system, the MTA will be able to accommodate even more passengers.
“Through our work on the Canarsie line, we’ve seen firsthand that CBTC technology can have a significant positive impact on ridership for the New York City subway system,” John Paljug, head of Siemens Rail Automation, said. “We’re extremely excited to extend our technology partnership with the MTA and bring advanced automation technology to riders on the Queens Boulevard line.”
