During the last six months, crews from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) have posted new signs between Lynnwood and Bellevue in preparation for the new Interstate 405 express toll lanes.

Drivers will now see white rectangular signs along the roadway that read “Illegal to Cross the Double White Line.”

“While we are installing these signs now, drivers won’t start to see the double white lines on the roadway until about a week before we launch express toll lanes,” Jennifer Charlebois, WSDOT toll systems engineer, said. “As we move through September, we will keep drivers updated and help them prepare for the major changes coming to I-405.”

On Sept. 17, crews and contractors will start to paint double white lines on the high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane section that runs between Lynnwood and Bothell. After the lines are finished, the new roadway will limit the HOV lane access to specific exit and entry points.

“We developed a map of entry and exit points to help drivers plan their trip in the express toll lanes and to understand how the toll rates signs work,” Charlebois said. “I encourage drivers to use this tool during the week of restricted access before tolling starts as well.”

The schedule depends on the weather, as crews need dry roadways to paint the new lanes.
