Florida, Arizona and New Jersey contractors and governing bodies recently received awards at the 16th annual American Road & Transportation Builders Association Transportation Foundation event that honors public-sector transportation agencies and private-sector firms that are remarkable at protecting environmental design, planning, and construction.

Two projects were recognized in the bridge category. Ames Construction Inc. and the Arizona Department of Transportation received $10 million for their work on the State Road 90 San Pedro River Bridge replacement project. The two organizations collaborated to replace the 26-foot wide San Pedro River Bridge, which was constructed of steel girder in 1955. The new bridge is 44-feet wide and structured from pre-case girder.

Hunter Contract Co. and Gunn Communications completed the Greenway Parkway Bridge in Phoenix in 2014. The bridge was built in 1988 when engineers noticed serious structural problems that cost the city $1 million to 2 million each year in maintenance and repair. The new bridge saves taxpayers $1.1 million.

In the major highway category, Dewberry and New Jersey Department of Transportation replaced the Passaic River bridge of Route 3. This category was awarded more than $100 million.

For tunnels, the Florida Department of Transportation and Nossaman completed the Port Miami Tunnel that connects Port facilities with Dodge Island. The tunnels are 4,200 feet long and 120 feet below the main shipping channel.
