United Airlines congratulated the U.S. and Cuban governments this week after both nations signed a formal agreement to restart air service between the two countries.

The airline plans to apply with the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to offer service between Havana and other cities worldwide once USDOT resolves a pending case involving route issues.

When USDOT approves the service, United Airlines customers will be able to access this newly expanded worldwide route network.

United Airlines and its United Express subsidiary run approximately 5,000 flights daily on average, traveling to an estimated 342 airports throughout six continents. In 2015 alone, the companies ran approximately 2 million flights, transporting 140 million customers.

United has the most comprehensive route network in the world. It includes main hubs in Houston, Denver, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, New York/Newark and Washington, D.C. It has over 700 mainline aircraft tin operation and plans to acquire 20 new Boeing aircraft, including  777s, 737 NGs, and 787s.
