The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said recently that it has expanded the recall of Takata air-bag inflators by 35 million to 40 million air bags.

The faulty inflators easily rupture, and have been tied to 10 fatalities and more than 100 injuries in the U.S.
“Today’s action is a significant step in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s aggressive oversight of Takata on behalf of drivers and passengers across America,” USDOT Secretary Anthony Foxx said. “The acceleration of this recall is based on scientific evidence and will protect all Americans from air-bag inflators that may become unsafe.”
The USDOT’s amended consent order adding up to 40 million more inflators to the recall list adds to the 28.8 million that already had been recalled prior to this announcement. Repairs to all recalled vehicles are not expected to be completed until sometime in 2019.
