USDOT inspector general to audit Federal Transit Administration

The inspector general of the U.S. Department of Transportation plans to audit the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and its handling of transportation projects, a plan that was announced during testimony before a recent House committee field hearing.

A similar audit was done on the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and its projects.

The testimony was given by Joseph Comé , deputy principal assistant inspector general for auditing and evaluation, during a field hearing of the House Oversight and Government Committee. Comé’s testimony focused on the federal oversight activity of projects that were implemented in New York after Hurricane Sandy, with a particular focus on the FTA.

Currently, the audit of investments and oversight of the FTA is in the planning stages.

The audit of the FHWA included its policies and guidelines on State Transportation Improvement Programs to ensure that these programs were receiving the necessary federal review requirements. This and a second audit on separate agreements was launched in March.
