The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) said recently that it is reviving its National Household Travel Survey (NHTS), which was last taken in 2009.

The NHTS will allow the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to gauge travelers’ needs across the country. USDOT eventually will mail out 130,000 surveys nationwide to randomly selected homes, having recently sent out the first wave.

FHWA said the survey aims to determine the typical uses of highways and local roads by area and determine an estimate of how many drivers are using roads and how often in a typical day.

The survey also aims to determine whether road travel has increased or decreased since the last survey in 2009. The survey also aims to determine estimates on public transit and bicycle usage among the public.
