Delaware Department of Transportation Secretary Jennifer Cohan, Dover Mayor Robin Christianson and Camden Mayor Justin King broke ground Feb. 6 on the long awaited West Dover Connector project.

The project creates 3.2 miles of roadway and includes improvements at the U.S. 13 and Rodney Village intersection with signal upgrades and additional turn lanes. Connections will be added to New Burton Road and Wyoming Mill Road. Bicycle lanes also will be added.

“We break ground on the West Dover Connector, a project that the Delaware Department of Transportation and local leaders first envisioned more than 10 years ago,” Cohan said. “The wait has been long, but we believe the result will be well worth the years of anticipation and preparation. When we complete this project in about two and a half years, people who live or work in Dover will enjoy a more efficient route between eastern and western Dover.”

The project is expected to also bring Camden’s historic district up to date.

“For years residents have complained of traffic on local streets, much of which is through traffic,” King said. “We are hopeful the success of the West Dover Connector will speed up the approval process for the Camden bypass. Between the West Dover Connector and the proposed Camden bypass, I anticipate a significant decrease in traffic through our historic district.”

The project provides direct connections for multiple residential areas to one another and to commercial and medical facilities.
