Crews with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) finished the first phase of road-sign foundation work on SR 99/Aurora Avenue North an entire week ahead of schedule, reopening the median lanes in both directions late last week.
The southbound bus-only lane will reopen soon as well, with the exception of Comstock Street.
The second phase of the sign project, which will direct drivers to the new SR 99 Tunnel, begins today at 8 p.m. Crews will need to close one block on the southbound right lane, near Comstock Street. Buses will be merged into the general-purpose lane. This phase is expected to last two or three weeks.
“Drivers listened to the warnings about the potential for longer-than-normal delays, and we really appreciate all their efforts,” David Sowers, deputy administrator of the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program, said. “We’re not quite out of the woods yet, so southbound drivers should use caution starting with Tuesday morning’s commute and watch for merging buses near the new work zone.”
The tunnel is expected to greatly improve traffic flow in the area.
