The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will begin a road project on Monday to relieve congestion on State Route 305 near Bainbridge Island by building a separated right-turn lane for northbound SR 305 drivers turning onto Suquamish Way Northeast.

When the project is completed, travelers exiting Bainbridge Island should face less congestion.

Because of the new lane, the current park-and-ride lot at Suquamish Way Northeast and SR 305 will be closed permanently on Sunday. There is a new park-and-ride lot located at the Clearwater Casino Resort parking garage.

The project also will include creation of a pedestrian/bicyclist island, as well as new sidewalks and flashing lights to alert drivers when bicyclists are using the Agate Pass Bridge.

During the construction period, drivers using SR 305 should be prepared for one-way alternating traffic on weeknights directed by flaggers, with occasional shoulder and turn-lane closures as well.

WSDOT said the project should be completed sometime this summer.
