INDOT: J-Turn project at intersections near Dale requires lane closures

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) recently began a project on US 231 near Dale to install J-Turns at the SR 62/Washington Street and SR 62/68 intersections to improve the safety of both intersections.

The project will require intermittent lane closures daily, with restrictions for northbound and southbound traffic for the duration of the project, which is expected to be finished sometime this summer.

The affected region extends from a half-mile north of SR 68 to a half-mile south of SR 62.

Statistics indicate a 35 percent decrease in crashes at intersections where J-Turns are installed, as well as a 54 percent decrease in injury crashes.

An average intersection located on a divided highway potentially has 42 different conflict points. 24 of which are caused by right-angle conflicts, which can cause T-bone accidents. In contrast, J-Turns have just 24 conflict points, with four of them at right angles. When crews reduce the amount of conflict points, drivers can travel more easily and safely.
