190 metro areas see rise in construction employment

New data from the Associated General Contractors of America shows that there has been an increase in construction employment in 190 of the 358 metro areas in the United States. From November 2014 to 2015, the areas with the highest growth include New York City, West Virginia and Ohio. Regions with declines in construction employment include Texas and Mississippi. Caltrans traffic data earns safety grant

The California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently awarded a grant to Caltrans to improve its traffic data capturing equipment. AAR releases weekly rail traffic for Dec. 26

Officials of the Association of American Railroads (AAR) published the latest U.S. rail traffic data from the week that ended with Dec. 26. The data shows that the cumulative rail traffic for the year of 2015 in the United States amounts to 391,107 intermodal units as well as carloads. NTSB releases rules for board hearings and meetings

The NTSB published its Final Rule Tuesday in the Federal Register on the agency’s products and procedures for its hearings and meetings. The new rules will be implemented beginning Jan. 25. Crews to build new off-ramp from SR 520 to Lake Washington Boulevard

Crews with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will soon finish constructing a new off-ramp that will allow drivers to travel from westbound State Route 520 directly to Lake Washington Boulevard. Seasonal Nostalgia Train draw large crowds

MTA New York City Transit recently hosted its seasonal Nostalgia Train rides, drawing large crowds who watched the ride and participated in the trips. For the last four weekends, thousands of train riders traveled between 2nd Avenue and Queens Plaza platforms. A new partnership with ASU and ADOT will provide locals with real-time weather updates for traffic flow and infrastructure safety. The partnership is thanks to a meteorology graduate student attending the School of Geographical Sciences & Urban Planning at ASU. MDOT recently chose ITS technologies for its research spotlight because the technologies are able to decrease crashes, traffic delays and emissions while still making notable returns with investments. Boeing makes payment to end enforcement cases

The FAA recently joined Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) in a comprehensive settlement agreement that will settle several pending as well as possible enforcement cases. Senate approves reauthorization of U.S. Coast Guard

The U.S. Senate approved the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2015 Dec. 18. The Senate updated the bill so that it now includes portions of HR 1987, which the U.S. House of Representatives passed May 18. There were also provisions from S. 1611 included in the new bill; S. 1611 was passed by the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee in the summer of 2015. Read More »

WSF launches fourth new Olympic Class ferry

Washington State Ferries (WSF) will launch the construction of its fourth new Olympic Class ferry, which is receiving funds from the Connecting Washington package for transportation finances, in Jan. I-676 to close bridge overnight in Philadelphia

PDOT has scheduled portions of Interstate 676 to close Monday so that crews can complete overhead bridge construction. The closures will affect traffic from I-76 and Broad Street interchanges on I-676 in Philadelphia. The closures will end 5 a.m. Thursday. Public-private partnership to build South Mountain Freeway in Arizona

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) developed a public-private partnership to construct the new Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway, which crews will start to build the summer of 2016. The highway is the largest project that has ever been proposed for Arizona. It is also the first highway public-private partnership that the state has seen and will not be used as a toll road.
